Our Halau

The dancers and musicians who make up Na Mele o ke Kai are all ages, sizes and ethnicities. Come join our ohana (family). E komo Mai! Welcome!

Na Mele o ke Kai is an association that welcomes all interested individuals who want to experience the language and traditions of Polynesian cultures through dance, music and song.

Our name is Hawaiian for "Songs of the Sea." This refers to both our location near the beautiful Pacific Ocean and the songs that we perform.

The accomplished dancers and musicians of Na Mele o ke Kai are available to perform at luaus, parties, weddings, fundraisers and cultural events. Our halau is under the direction of Sandy Rodriguez. The musicians are from all areas of the Central Coast and everyone sings!

Our Kumu

Originally, a hula "halau" was a sacred house where the hula was taught. Now it refers to a hula school. Each hula halau is led by a "kumu," or teacher. Sandy Rodriguez is our director and Kumu Hula (hula teacher).

Sandy was born and raised in California and began dancing hula at the age of 10. She has been inspired by many people over the years which enabled her to develop her own unique style.

Laurel Ihara of Hilo impressed Sandy with the Beamer style of hula. Jean "Kini" Akens taught Sandy Hawaiian, Maori, Samoan and Tahitian for over seven years. Others were Kumalei Mathews, Ka'imi Mathews, Naomi Kalama and Willie Pulawa. More recently she and her halau our under the guidance of Kumu Pekelo Day from the Big Island of Hawaii. However, Sandy's most influential teacher was Master Kumu Hula Joseph Kamoha'i Kaha'ulelio. He was well-versed in all forms of Polynesian dancing. His aloha spirit of teaching continues through Sandy as she brings forth his teaching style and songs.
